A few months ago, the forward-thinking British weekly The Economist put today’s global food crisis in perspective by declaring on their cover: “The End of Cheap Food.” The message—that food prices are rising like never before, threatening to destabilize much of the world—was accompanied by hope: The world has a tremendous opportunity to address decades of misguided government policies and management, resulting in a higher standard of living for all of us.
The Washington Post began publishing a series Sunday to educate its readers. The series, entitled “Global Food Crisis: The New World of Soaring Food Prices,” began with a look at how we got to this point: “The food price shock now roiling world markets is destabilizing governments, igniting street riots and threatening to send a new wave of hunger rippling through the world’s poorest nations.”
The series’s second day tells the story of a family in Mauritania struggling to make ends meet. Mauritania has been particularly hurt by the food crisis. The Post reports that the African nation produces just 30% of what its people eat and imports the rest—a recipe for disaster when food prices are rocketing to new levels, exporting countries are raising export taxes or halting foreign sales altogether, and rich countries are hoarding food. Worse, Mauritania doesn’t have the agricultural means to feed itself:
U.N. experts, World Bank officials and aid groups fear it marks the onset of the worst food crisis in [Africa] in decades; officials are calling for $755 million in fresh emergency food assistance from rich countries. Aid groups are already falling behind in their efforts to provide food across the continent, leaving even the poorest communities increasingly dependent on the market.
This is the new face of hunger.
The third day examines wheat prices in America and begins with an anecdote of a Maryland bagel store owner who resists raising the price of his bagels to past the dollar mark:
I’ve never seen anything like this in 20 years,” he said. “It’s a nightmare.”
Fleishman and his customers are hardly alone. Across America, turmoil in the world wheat markets has sent prices of bread, pasta, noodles, pizza, pastry and bagels skittering upward, bringing protests from consumers.
Of course, for those readers aged 34 and up this isn’t the first global food crisis of their lifetime. In 1974, Time magazine began a report about the global food shortage with a Bible verse:
For nation shall rise against nation … and there shall be famines and troubles; these are the beginnings of sorrows. —Mark 13:8
Nothing is older to man than his struggle for food. From the time the early hunters stalked the mammoths and the first sedentary “farmers” scratched the soil to coax scrawny grain to grow, man has battled hunger. History is replete with his failures. The Bible chronicles one famine after an other; food was in such short supply in ancient Athens that visiting ships had to share their stores with the city; Romans prayed at the threshold of Olympus for food.
Every generation in medieval Europe suffered famine. The poor ate cats, dogs and the droppings of birds; some starving mothers ate their children. In the 20th century, periods of extreme hunger drove Soviet citizens to cannibalism, and as late as 1943, floods destroyed so much of Bengal’s crops that deaths from starvation reached the millions.
After World War II, however, it seemed that man at long last was winning the battle against hunger … experts now question whether man can prevent widespread starvation … Against this gloomy backdrop, about 1,000 delegates from some 100 nations and a dozen international organizations are gathering in Rome this week for the World Food Conference, sponsored by the United Nations. It will be the first concerted global effort in history to confront the problem of hunger … This is urgently needed to avoid fulfilling the nightmare of Parson Thomas Malthus, the English economist who predicted nearly two centuries ago that population would outrun man’s capacity to produce food.
Everyone should have access to the facts.

All Gnome locations
1. Go to Papa B's Pawn Shop in Tenderloin to find it on a shelf inside.
2. Go to the Tidis corporation shipping facility, north of the Palace of Fine Arts. This is a front for the Brava crime syndicate. The Gnome is near the front gate, inside a doghouse.
3. Go a block north of Embarcadero Center, and enter the alleyway across from the park. Look for a rainbow-colored awning on a bus stop to know if you are going the right way. Go over the fence and climb the ladder to find a vent. Use the RC Jumper to enter the vent. Use the Blume control box inside before going to the rooftop. The ventilation duct will now be unlocked. Enter it to find the Gnome.
4. Look for a gang controlled lot with a small mobile home near the San Francisco to Oakland freeway. There is wheelbarrow full of dark liquid nearby that contains the Gnome.
5. Go to the HAUM Data Center. The block next to it has a parking lot and a small brick building with a mural of a unicorn on it. Reach the roof of this building to find the Gnome.
6. Go to the top level of the east block of the Transbay Center. Activate the RC Jumper (requires the 'Enhanced Spring' ability) off the shorter hedge to access the walled-off area. The Gnome is found inside.
7. Go to Stache and Vine, near the Mission-Dolores Hackerspace. Across the street is a grey building. Reach the rooftop of the building to find the Gnome near the hot tub.
8. Search for the garden west of the Painted Ladies in San Francisco. Enter from the corner of Doobie Donuts, and go inside the alleyway. The Gnome can be found up the first set of stairs.
9. Go to the west end of the park near the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Go to the rooftop of Taqueria to find the Gnome.
10. Go to the tunnel between Lake Merritt and the Coliseum in Oakland. Climb up the small dock inside and use the ladder to find the Gnome.

Gnome Outfit
First, you must activate the first of two Gnome laptops. Look on Fisherman's Wharf to find a circular seafood restaurant. On the building's north side, find a duct and send the RC Jumper through the opening to reach a gnome and a laptop. Interact with those attractions to find a map pointing to gnome locations around the game world. There are also two 'X' marks, including one that corresponds to your current location.
Your next step is to find 10 gnomes, which are marked on the map and can be found in the approximate areas indicated below. You will need upgrades to access some of them.
Tenderloin: Pawn Shop - Sitting on the shelf at Papa B's Pawn Shop.
Tidis Warehouse - At the Tidis shipping facility, located north from the Palace of Fine Arts, take out the gangsters and dogs that patrol the yard, then check the doghouse positioned near the front gate.
Embarcadero Center: Health Store Roof - head one block north from Embarcadero Center, and follow an alleyway that extends from the park's northwest corner. It leads past a bus stop with rainbow awning. Vault the fence, climb a ladder to some scaffold, then drop your RC jumper into the vent at your feet. Access the Blume control box, then climb to the building's roof. Open the ventilation duct that you should have unlocked with the Jumper, and use that Jumper once again to follow the vents to the waiting gnome.

Soma Freeway Entrance - Look for the on-ramp that accesses the freeway where it crosses from San Francisco to Oakland. Beneath that ramp, you'll find a homeless camp guarded by gang members. Drive a box truck, van, or a lift to the fence along the back of that area. Then send an RC Jumper over the fence to collect the waiting gnome (it is resting in a wheelbarrow).
Haum Data Center - The block next to the HAUM Data Center beneath the Bay Bridge (between SF and Oakland) contains a parking lot and a small brick building (there’s a mural of a unicorn on it). Using a construction lift or other raised platform, reach the roof of this building to find a Gnome (and some other toys).
Transbay Center - On the top level of the East block of the Transbay Center, there’s a large hedge square in the center of the rooftop park. Using the Enhanced Spring skill (or a tall truck), launch your RC jumper off the shorter hedge next to these and into the walled-off area. Inside is a deeply unsettling tableau and another Gnome.
Rooftop Hot Tub - Across the street from the Stache and Vine near the Mission-Dolores Hackerspace is a grey building with a rooftop patio. This area can be reached either by climbing the storage shed and latticework on the West wall or by using a construction lift found in a nearby gang-occupied yard. Look near the hot tub to find the gnome.
Garden of Peace & Love - A block to the west of the Painted Ladies is small communal garden (with naked hippies). Enter it from the corner where Doobie Donuts is located and climb the first set of stairs on your right inside the alleyway. At the top of the stairs you’ll find another gnome.
SF Moma - On the west end of the park across from the SF MOMA, use the construction lift to reach the top of the taqueria. There is a gnome around the corner of the rooftop.
Oakland: Aquaduct - Between Lake Merrit and the Coliseum runs a tunnel that boats can pass through. In the center of this tunnel is a small dock area - climb ashore and up the ladder to find this gnome resting on a lawn chair.
After finding the gnomes, you need to seek out the area that corresponds to the other 'X' you saw on the map. Make your way to the north end of a park located next to the WKZ station. Check in the tent near the area's northwest corner to obtain the new clothes that are your reward for the extended scavenger hunt.
