KINGSPORT — The New Year’s Eve Street Party in downtown Kingsport has returned for a second year.

The event that kicked off the Model City’s centennial celebration is back by popular demand, and organizers say this year’s version will be bigger and better than last year’s.

What’s happening?

The street party will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight on Dec. 31st in the 100 block of Broad Street (where the downtown concert series is held). Instead of the traditional dropping of a ball, the city will launch a spectacular fireworks show at the stroke of midnight to ring in the new year.

All centennial merchandise will be available at the event from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., marked down to $5. If the temperatures get too cold for some, patio heaters and small firepits will provide spots where individuals can warm up.

“Our centennial New Year’s Street Party was a great opening to our centennial year,” said CeeGee McCord, co-chair of the Centennial Commission. “Everyone had such a great time last year, it was an easy decision to host this popular event again.”

List of activities

- A live DJ (Steve Bailey with DJ Express) with emcee Josh Smith of WJHL.

- The Greater Kingsport YMCA will have its KidsZone, sporting a “glow theme,” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Youngsters can make their own glitter slime, play 9 square and ladder ball, have their picture made in the photo booth and even get their own glow sticks while supplies last.

- Sleepy Owl Brewery will serve signature brews, and several downtown restaurants, such as Macado’s, Mr. Papa’s & Beer, TK Hotdogs and Nutty Java will be staying open late and having a number of specials. Model City Tap House will also be open late and will host the food truck Feeding Frenzy.

- Other activities include a performance by Eugene the Illusionist, a scavenger hunt, a fire chain spinner, pony rides and swings.

Free to the public

The street party is free and open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to bring a chair, just as with the summer concert series.

The 100 block of Broad Street, between East Main Street and West Market Street, will be closed from 10 a.m. on Dec. 31 to 2 a.m. on Jan. 1 to accommodate the event.
