The open oceans are commonly compared to vast deserts as their land equivalent. How do the animals that reside in this area find something to eat when the water can stretch for thousands of miles across and many kilometres deep? Have a read and check out the summary.

  1. We were shown the legendary “boiling sea” where a flurry of sea creatures came together at once in a feeding frenzy. Large tuna fish take 40mph swipes at thousands of small lantern fish, with dolphins, manta rays and birds from the sky above joining in on the action too. Such thrashing about in the ocean causes a lot of “white water”, hence creating the illusion of the water appearing to boil and bubble up. The amazing thing is, after 15 minutes of feeding, there was nothing left except silvery scales making their way to the sea bed.
  2. I loved the scenes of the sperm whales, especially where we had a view from the whale’s back because there was a camera placed there! How brilliant! Sperm whales take several deep breaths at the surface in order to saturate their blood with oxygen. This allows them to dive to depths of around 1000m to hunt as a pod, using a series of sonar clicks that get closer together as they detect shoals of fish. Any calves that the pod have usually stay at the surface to wait. Many follow their mothers to the maximum depth possible but their lung capacities are not matured enough yet.
  3. The open ocean can easily create its own weather system. The warmth of the sun evaporates the water, which condenses to form huge storm clouds. These storms can span over 1000 miles and create waves over 30m tall!
  4. The oceans of our planet are all connected by currents, sort of like a circulatory system. A story was told about a shipping crate of ducks that escaped, and some of these ducks were found as far away as Australia, Scotland and the Arctic Circle!
  5. A Portuguese Man O’War can “sail” itself across the surface of the ocean using an inflated gas-filled bladder and a jelly-like sail. However, what lurks underneath is far more sinister. 30m long threads/tentacles trail below it – and these are deadly poisonous to sea creatures (and even humans!). Horrifyingly, these jelly-fish paralyse nearby prey and digest them with their own chemicals, gorging on up to 100 fish a DAY.
  6. There is a big mystery that surrounds where the whale sharks go to give birth to their live young. Despite not being mammals, these animals can carry up to 300 live young! The female whale sharks appear to go to an islet near the Galapagos Islands, named Darwin Island. Swirling currents around this place attract shoals of fish, which, in turn, attracts many sharks. To avoid these predators, the whale sharks dive to a depth of up to 600m. It is believed that they give birth at these depths but this is not yet proven.
  7. Lastly, David Attenborough spoke to us about how plastics are building up fatal levels of toxins in the ocean’s food chains. We saw an example of this with a pilot whale and her dead baby calf. It was presumed the calf died from ingesting poisoned milk.

Mar 31, 2019  Feeding frenzy in the Sea of Cortez. Predators gather to feast on a bait ball off Baja, Mexico. And the Blue Planet team wanted to film one of the most elusive of them all – the rarely witnessed‘boiling sea’. Until now, this feeding frenzy of thousands of tuna leaping out of the water to catch their prey, turning the sea white with their splashes, has been the stuff of legends. Orcas and humpback feeding on herring in Norway, part of this sequence was aired by BBC in Blue Planet 2 opening episode 1 'one Ocean' Norway feeding frenzy by Atlantic Ridge Productions and Visualmondo - BBC Blue Planet 2 sequence on Vimeo. Blue Planet II is a 2017 British nature documentary series produced by the BBC Natural History Unit. Like its predecessor, The Blue Planet (2001), it is narrated and presented by naturalist Sir David Attenborough, while the main music score was composed by Hans Zimmer.

After watching 4 episodes there DOES seem to be a “save the planet” message present every week. Considering that Blue Planet 2 is being watched by millions of viewers, I strongly hope that these messages are not too subtle and the public are thinking about their own action plans that can have a positive impact for the environment.
